School News: The Portsmouth Grammar School with Portsmouth Cathedral
The Provost and Chapter of Portsmouth Cathedral and the Headmaster of The Portsmouth Grammar School are pleased to announce the institution of a Philip Barrett Scholarship to commemorate the Reverend Philip Barrett, former pupil of the school, former chorister and Lay Clerk of the Cathedral and distinguished ecclesiastical scholar. Gregory Sanderson has been elected as the first scholar.

The Headmaster wrote to Mrs Barrett:
“….. These choral scholarships will be for Portsmouth Grammar School pupils who are Lay Clerks in The Cathedral Choir – chiefly for the provision of singing lessons for those hoping to gain University Choral Scholarships. The Provost and I feel that the idea of commemorating your very remarkable son in a way which we hope you will consider appropriate is too opportune to be overlooked.”
From Mrs Barrett:
“…. It was a splendid, dignified but simple ceremony, attended by members of the school staff, parents and friends of the school at evensong in the cathedral. After the anthem, the Provost prayed for Philip and paid tribute to all that he had done at the cathedral and the school. The Headmaster held a small reception afterwards, attended by the first recipient of this scholarship.”
