What’s On?

Showcasing Hampshire History is a free-entry event with exhibits and talks on local history.

It’s part of the Winchester Heritage Open Days Festival programme and a great opportunity to see what’s happening and meet other local historians.

The venue is the Ashburton Hall in the HCC headquarters, with entrance from Sussex Street, on the east side, between the Westgate at one end and the Hampshire Record Office at the other. There is a public car park with card or cash payment!

Some highlights of the day’s programme of talks are

  • 11:30 Celebrating Hampshire Historians by Barry Shurlock
  • 12:00 Nuggets of local and county history from The Little Book of Hampshire by Tour Guide Erica Wheeler
  • 14:30 “Digging up” your ancestors by Fiona Ranger
  • 15:30 The Captain Swing riots in Hampshire: why they are important and how their bicentenary is being commemorated by Edward Fennell & Bill Lucas


 

What’s the Winchester Heritage Open Days Festival?

Taking place each September, Winchester Heritage Open Days is a free ten-day festival run by Hampshire History Trust. The festival celebrates Winchester’s history, architecture and cultural heritage – that includes everything from old buildings, transport, gardens, open spaces, theatre, household objects, books, fashion, postcards, to food and drink!

The festival is part of the national Heritage Open Days scheme and every year creates a diverse and local programme of events ranging from music, theatre, workshops and living history to exhibitions, open buildings, guided tours, walks and talks.

What’s on?

177 free events in Hampshire and the Isle of Wight including

  • one-off talks
  • activities – including walks and treasure hunts – booking usually required
  • places of historic interest – churches, museums, buildings, parks which are open for part or all of the 10 day period
